Causes Of Baby Eczema

The main cause for high incidence of eczema in babies is because of their immune system and digestive system which are not properly developed and the skin is also much thinner making it susceptible to infections.

The most common cause is over sensitivity to allergens such as inhalants (pollen, house dust etc.) or ingests (eggs, milk etc.) Or contact with some external substance due to which the skin becomes inflamed and sore and the condition is called as atopic dermatitis.

Wool or scratchy fabrics and some chemicals like ammonia, chlorine, and cigarette smoke may irritate the body and cause eczema. Soaps, shampoos etc used for bathing the baby and detergents used for washing the clothes of the baby may leave residue which may irritate the baby and they may also take out the moisture in the skin and make the baby’s skin dry and prone to eczema.

Nickel (present in belts, ear rings, buckles, buttons etc.), rubber and perfumes may act as allergens so they should be avoided.

When antibiotics are taken good bacteria and infection fighting cells get destroyed and the immune system gets weakened and the baby’s resistance power to eczema gets reduced.

The food given to the baby may contain allergens. Certain food products especially cow’s milk, eggs, wheat; refined sugars, citrus fruits and alcohol are mostly allergic. In case of breast feeding, mother’s diet may indirectly cause eczema in babies due to consumption of food to which the baby may be allergic.

Understanding Baby Eczema

Eczema sufferers have mutations in genes that control production of filaggrin (a protein that is required for forming skin barrier) thus the skin becomes more susceptible to irritants.

  • Moisture from milk, saliva and sweat may cause eczema.
  • It can be aggravated by rise in temperature.
  • Grass and weeds may also act as allergens
